New Zealand Business Confidence Improves In April

New Zealand business sentiment improved in April, supported by a sharp jump in confidence emanating from the retail industry and service sector, a survey from the National Bank of New Zealand showed Monday.

A net 36 percent of businesses expect better times for the economy over the coming year, up two points on March. At the same time, net 36 percent forecast better times for their own business over the year ahead, but down 3 points from the prior month.

Investment intentions climbed to +18, marking the highest level since March 2005. Profit expectations for the year ahead edged up by 1 point to 15. On the other hand, employment intentions deteriorated in April.

The survey showed that a net 19 percent expect to be raising prices over the coming 12 months, down 3 points on the month prior. Inflation expectations were unchanged at 2.8 percent.
