South African Trade Deficit Narrows In March


South Africa's merchandise trade deficit decreased from the previous month in March, data released by the South African Revenue Service showed Monday.

The trade deficit declined to ZAR5.5 billion in March from ZAR7.5 billion in February. In March 2011, the trade balance was a surplus of ZAR1 billion.

Export of goods increased 9 percent month-on-month to ZAR61.3 billion in March. Shipments of mineral products climbed 25 percent, while dispatches of chemical and allied products jumped 26 percent. There was a 4 percent growth in exports of precious and semi-precious stones and metals during the month.

The value of imports advanced 4.8 percent sequentially to ZAR66.8 billion in March. Arrivals of machinery and electrical appliances advanced 12 percent sequentially, while imports of minerals rose 4 percent. There was an 8 percent monthly growth in imports of vehicles, aircraft and vessels during the month.
