2017.04.2104:35:00UTC+00French Election: Terrorist Attack in Champs-Elysees Likely to Weigh on French Election on Sunday

Last night there was an attack in Paris, near one of the world’s most prestigious Boulevard and important shopping district in France Champs-Elysees as a 39-year-old male attacked a police bus with an automatic weapon.  He killed one policeman and injured another two before being killed by security forces on Champs-Elysees. A hunt is currently underway for a second suspect and bombs. The whole of the Champs-Elysees was evacuated. Because of its worldwide renown and its large number of visitors, the avenue has long been seen as a potential target. The identity of the attacker has been verified but not released as investigation and raids are still under way. It is known that the French intelligence services identified the man as a potential Islamic radical.

The attack comes just days before France’s most vital and tense election in the recent history, which will be held on Sunday. We believe that this last minute attack would have a profound impact on the choices of French people on Sunday. While it seems logical that the Front National leader Marine Le Pen who has been very outspoken against radical Islamic terrorism would receive ballots benefit, but the impact could hardly be predicted in reality. French people may even go for a safe candidate like Mr. Fillon in response to the attack. However, it is not likely to benefit the front runner Emmanuel Macron, who is widely seen as a lightweight when it comes to foreign policy and security.
