Japan's consumer confidence weakened unexpectedly in October to its lowest level in nearly two years, survey data from the Cabinet Office showed on Wednesday.

The consumer confidence indicator fell to 43 from 43.4 in September. Economists had forecast a score of 43.5.

The latest reading was the lowest since January 2017, when the score was 43.

Among the sub-indexes, those for overall livelihood, income growth and employment declined, while the measure for the willingness to buy durable goods remained unchanged.

The latest survey was conducted on October 15 among 8,400 households.
