Taiwan's consumer price inflation rose to the highest level in seven months in May, the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics said on Wednesday.

The consumer price index rose 0.94 percent year-on-year in May, following a 0.66 percent increase in April. Economists had expected a 0.80 percent rise.

The latest inflation was the highest since October last year, when it was 1.6 percent.

Excluding fruits, vegetables and energy, core CPI declined 0.17 percent in May.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices grew 0.15 percent in May.

During the January to May period, the overall consumer price index rose 0.51 percent and core measure climbed 0.49 percent.

Further, data showed that the wholesale price index declined 0.23 percent, after a 0.66 percent rise in April. Month-on-month, wholesale prices rose 0.78 percent in May.
