Japan's Finance Ministry said the country's merchandise trade surplus stood at 481.7 billion yen in April, falling short of expectations for 520.7 billion yen.

That was below the 614.7 billion yen recorded in March.

Japan's exports rose an annual 7.5 percent to 6.329 trillion yen, missing expectations for an 8.0 percent increase, and down from 12.0 percent in March.

On a yearly basis, imports increased 15.1 percent to 5.847 trillion yen versus expectations for a gain of 14.8 percent but down from 15.8 percent a month earlier.
