2017.05.2903:43:00UTC+00Xinhua: China to Enforce Cybersecurity Law Thursday

China will implement a cybersecurity law which requires rigid data surveillance and storage for companies working in the nation as it faces heightened risks from cyber hacking and terrorism, according to a report by Xinhua.

Enacted in November, the legislation prohibits online service providers from collating and selling users' personal details, and gives people the right to have their data removed in the event of abuse.

The report said violators will pay huge penalties. But it did not provide additional information.

A Reuters report earlier said that business groups abroad were pressing Chinese authorities to defer the enforcement of the law as it would hugely affect their business.

Currently, China has no comprehensive framework on data protection. Critics, however, argued the new measure endangers foreign technology firms outside the sectors that the Asian country considers crucial.
