Business confidence in New Zealand deteriorated in June, survey data from ANZ Bank showed Wednesday.

The business sentiment index dropped to -39.0 in June from -27.2 in the previous month.

Firms' views of their own activity declined from 14.0 to 9.0 in June.

Looking at own activity by industry, retailers remained the least positive, while manufacturers were the most upbeat.

The activity outlook weakened in June, with the corresponding index falling to 9.4 from 13.6 in May.

When businesses were asked what they thought about business conditions in the year ahead, a net 39 percent of businesses were pessimistic, down 12 points and back at November lows, ANZ said.
