Cyprus' consumer price inflation rose strongly in September, led by a surge in utility costs, preliminary data from the statistical service showed Thursday.

The consumer price index rose 3.13 percent year-on-year following 2.54 percent in August. The index has been rising steadily since May and at a faster rate each month.

The housing, water, electricity and gas sub-group registered an 11 percent jump in prices during September. That was followed by a 6.48 percent increase in the transport group.

Prices fell the most in the communication sub-group, down 5.17 percent.

Compared to the previous month, the CPI rose 0.86 percent in September.
