The unemployment rate in Australia came in at a seasonally adjusted 5.1 percent in December, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said on Thursday.

That beat forecasts for 5.2 percent, which would have been unchanged from the November reading.

The Australian economy added 28,900 jobs last month, beating expectations for an increase of 10,000 jobs after gaining 38,500 jobs in the previous month.

There was a loss of 300 full-time jobs and an addition of 29,200 jobs. The participation rate came in at 66.0 percent - unchanged and in line with expectations.
