2016.10.2705:35:00UTC+00European Union called 'impossible' trade mediator after CETA downfall

A European Parliament official said the European Union has no capacity to close a free trade accord with Canada, which could impact its capability to strike agreements in the future.

European Parliament Vice President Alexander Lambsdorff said the bloc proved they are not capable enough as global negotiating partner, adding a small region of Belgium can deter the entire Europe. He hoped the country could resolve its matters to have it sealed this year.

The 27 European governments have supported the EU-Canada trade agreement. However, Belgium said the country cannot sign it because the Wallonia region is opposing the deal.

Canadian premier Justin Trudeau postponed his European visit to sign the CETA as Belgian legislators failed to reach a consensus over the accord.
