The scandal over Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny’s poisoning and his further jailing has not gone unnoticed. Foreign ministers from EU countries are certain that the trial and subsequent prosecution of Navalny were fabricated. Therefore, they have decided to impose further sanctions on Russian officials over the jailing of Alexei Navalny.

Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said after a meeting with EU foreign ministers that such gross violations of human rights cannot be ignored. Russian officials responsible for the arrest, sentencing and persecution of the opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, should face EU sanctions.

"In response to events around the situation of Mr. Navalny we reached a political agreement to impose restrictive measures against those responsible for his arrest, and sentencing and persecution, and in doing that, for the first time ever, we will make use of the European Union global human rights regime to this end," Josep Borrell pointed out.

Notably, sanctions will be targeted at a certain group of people. New names are constantly being added to the list. So far, six Russian officials and one organization have already been on the list. However, after the prosecution, EU chief diplomat Josep Borrell is drawing up new names of officials who will face sanctions.
