The pilot of a plane of the Colombian airline Avianca carried out an emergency landing in the Azores Islands after an electrical failure. The failure occurred in a flight from Madrid to Bogota.

According to Avianca, the emergency landing was a "preventive measure" to have the aircraft checked "before continuing its route to El Dorado Airport."

Because of the emergency, recorded on Saturday, the pilot made the decision to release fuel before landing on Santa Maria, one of the nine islands of the Portuguese archipelago, where the plane was expected by the airport's emergency teams.

"The safety of the customers and the crew is a priority so that while the plane was checked, the 250 passengers on board were transferred to hotels in the city where they spent the night to leave for Bogota on another company plane," added Avianca.
