The total value of retail sales in Australia was up a seasonally adjusted 0.4 percent on month in June, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said on Friday - coming in at A$26.812 billion.

That beat forecasts for an increase of 0.3 percent following the 0.4 percent gain in May.

For the second quarter of 2018, retail sales jumped 1.2 percent to A$79.138 billion. That also exceeded expectations for an increase of 0.8 percent and was up from 0.2 percent in the three months prior.

By category, there were increases in food retailing (0.4 percent), clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing (0.7 percent), household goods retailing (0.3 percent), department stores (0.5 percent), cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services (0.2 percent), and other retailing (0.1 percent).
