Indonesia's exports rose unexpectedly in December, figures from Statistics Indonesia showed on Wednesday.

Exports rose 1.28 percent year-on-year in December, confounding expectations for a decrease of 2.2 percent.

Meanwhile, imports declined 5.62 percent annually, which was bigger than the 5.0 percent drop economists had forecast.

On a monthly basis, exports grew 3.77 percent and imports decreased 5.47 percent in December.

The trade balance showed a deficit of $30 million in December. Economists had expected a deficit of $430 million.
