2018.08.0300:28:00UTC+00Malaysia Trade Surplus Shrinks In June

Malaysia's foreign trade surplus decreased in June from a year ago, as imports grew faster than exports, figures from the Department of Statistics showed Friday.

The trade surplus fell to MYR 6.0 billion in June from MYR 9.8 billion in the corresponding month last year. It was also lower than the expected surplus of MYR 9.4 billion.

Exports climbed 7.6 percent year-over-year June, but well below the 11.5 percent rise economists had forecast.

Shipments of electrical and electronic products, which accounts for 38.0 percent of total exports, rose 6.9 percent annually in June.

Imports registered a double-digit growth of 14.9 percent in June from a year ago, slightly slower than the expected spike of 15.2 percent.

All main categories of imports by end use and broad economic categories classifications recorded increases in June.
