Firms across the world reported that they have been hit by a massive ransomware cyberattack, disrupting computers with a virus similar to the one that infected over 300, 000 computer systems last month.

The fast spreading cyber attack that aims to extort bitcoin as ransom from companies underlined concerns that firms have failed to toughen up their network security from increasingly aggressive hackers.

The malware included a code known as “Eternal Blue” which experts believe was stolen from the U.S. National Security Agency and was also utilized in the previous month's ransomware attack called “WannaCry”.

The attack crippled computers running Windows by encrypting hard drives and overwriting files. It demanded $300 bitcoin payment in exchange for restoring access. Over 30 victims of the attack ceded to the demand and paid the due amount into the bitcoin account linked by the hackers.

Russia and Ukraine were the most affected by the cyber attack. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said it was monitoring the attacks and communicating with other nations.
