Australia's private capital expenditure declined unexpectedly in the second quarter, figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed Thursday.

Capital expenditure decreased 2.5 percent in the second quarter, in contrast to a 0.6 percent rise economists had forecast and upwardly revised 1.2 percent increase in the first quarter.

Expenditure for building and structures declined 3.9 percent and that for plant and machinery decreased 0.9 percent.

On a yearly basis, capital expenditure climbed 0.4 percent in the June quarter.
