During the COVID-19 pandemic, US farmers encountered a crisis in the food industry. They were caught off-guard being unable to sell large quantities of agricultural produce and livestock amid low demand. To make things worse, this is not the only trouble. They cannot keep the growing number of the poultry and cattle. The pork industry has been hit especially hard. Besides, a lot of employees are sidelined by quarantine orders. So, US farmers are forced to make a tough decision and euthanize their livestock. The shutdown in the domestic economy has disrupted supply chains. As soon as lockdown measures had been imposed, Americans rushed to stuff their freezers with food with a view to obeying the stay-home directive. However, buoyant demand was followed by a crater in consumer activity. Farmers became prey to the government restrictive measures as meat processing plants, chain stores, restaurants, and cafes were ordered to close business. In other words, US farmers lost the lion’s share of their sales market. According to the US Department of Agriculture, a dozen of eggs now costs 89 cents on average compared to $2.83 in April. Retail prices of milk, meat, and poultry also went down. Such large-scale dumping of farm animals was spotted by animal rights activists. Animal Place is the oldest and largest nonprofit organization for abused farm animals in the US. Citing Kim Sturla, its director and co-founder, the charity rescued 140,000 chickens from the farm in Iowa where the owner lacked resources to keep them. Animal Place usually delivers chickens to Northern California by trucks. Volunteers check their health condition and find a good home for them.
