Slovakia's consumer price inflation accelerated in August, figures from the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic showed on Tuesday.

The consumer price index rose 3.8 percent year-on-year in August, following a 3.3 percent rise in July. Economists had expected a 3.7 percent rise.

Transport cost increased 11.1 percent yearly in August and alcoholic beverages and tobacco prices rose by 8.6 percent. Prices for communication, and recreation and culture grew by 6.6 percent and 3.9 percent, respectively.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.4 percent in August, after a 0.5 percent gain in the previous month. Economists had forecast a growth of 0.3 percent.

The core inflation rose to 4.5 percent in August from 3.9 percent in July. Economists had forecast a rise of 4.1 percent.

On a month-on-month basis, core CPI rose 0.4 percent in August, after a 0.5 percent increase in the prior month. Economists had expected a 0.3 percent rise.
