The inflation rate in Ireland decreased to an annual 1.7% in May 2025, down from 2.2% in April, marking its slowest growth in five months. This moderation was primarily influenced by a notable drop in transport prices, which fell by 2.4% compared to a 1.8% increase the previous month. Additionally, there were milder price hikes in housing and utilities at 2.0% (down from 2.2%), and a slowdown in the cost increases for restaurants and hotels to 2.8% (down from 3.3%), as well as recreation and culture, which saw an increase of 2.4% compared to 4.2% in April. However, these declines were partially offset by quicker price escalation in food and non-alcoholic beverages, which rose by 4.0% from 3.4%, as well as miscellaneous goods and services at 2.4% from 2.1%, and in the segment of alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and narcotics, which saw a rise to 3.1% from 2.2%. Core inflation, which factors out energy and unprocessed foods, dropped to 1.9%, the lowest it has been since July 2021. On a month-to-month basis, consumer prices remained steady in May, following a 0.4% increase in April.
