South Africa has taken a decisive step by sending officials to the United States to lay the groundwork for formal trade discussions, aiming to counteract significant tariffs, President Cyril Ramaphosa revealed on Tuesday. This initiative comes after months of futile negotiations with the Trump administration, which recently enforced a 30% tariff on South African imports. Addressing parliament, Ramaphosa stated, “The Presidency and the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition have dispatched representatives ... tasked with preparing for upcoming formal negotiations with the U.S. government, expected to commence in a few days.” The delegation is set to engage with U.S. administration officials, lawmakers, and business leaders in both New York and Washington, as South Africa strives to alleviate trade tensions and reestablish economic partnerships.
