22.05.202612:00:00UTC+00Mexico’s GDP Growth Cools Sharply to 0.2% in Q1 2026, Down from 1.8% a Year Earlier

Mexico’s economy nearly stalled at the start of 2026, with gross domestic product expanding just 0.2% year-over-year in the first quarter, according to data updated on 22 May 2026. This marks a pronounced slowdown from the 1.8% annual growth recorded in the first quarter of 2025.

The figures show that, on a year-over-year basis, the pace of expansion in the first quarter of 2026 was significantly weaker than the previous year’s performance for the same period. The prior indicator, which compared Q1 2025 to Q1 2024, had shown a more solid 1.8% increase, underscoring how much momentum has cooled.

The year-over-year comparison framework highlights a clear loss of speed in Mexico’s economic activity as 2026 began, signaling a more fragile growth environment and raising questions about the durability of the country’s recent recovery trend.
