16.07.202604:58:24UTC+00US to Impose 25% Tariff on Some Imports from Brazil

The United States plans to impose a 25% tariff on certain imports from Brazil under Section 301 of the Trade Act. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said in a statement late Wednesday that the move follows a year-long investigation, which concluded that Brazilian policies on digital trade, tariffs, intellectual property, ethanol market access, and deforestation place burdens on U.S. commerce.

Brazil would be the first country targeted under U.S. President Donald Trump’s new tariff strategy, which is based on Section 301 of U.S. trade law—a provision that authorizes investigations into alleged unfair trade practices, according to Reuters.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Brazilian government had not negotiated with Washington in good faith and accused Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of putting his own ego ahead of reaching an agreement that would benefit the Brazilian people.
