Canada’s annual inflation rate edged higher in July 2026, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rising 3.0% year-over-year, up from 2.8% in June 2026. The latest data, updated on 17 August 2026, indicate a modest re-acceleration in price growth as measured against the same month a year earlier.

The July reading, assessed on a year-over-year basis, compares the change in prices in July 2026 to July 2025. By contrast, the previous figure of 2.8% for June reflected the change from June 2026 versus June 2025. The move from 2.8% to 3.0% suggests inflationary pressures remain present in the Canadian economy, keeping the headline rate slightly above a typical 2% target range for price stability.

The uptick will be closely watched by market participants and policymakers, as it may influence expectations for the Bank of Canada’s policy stance in the coming months. While the increase is modest, it underscores that the disinflation trend seen earlier in the year is not yet firmly entrenched, and the path back to lower, more stable inflation may remain uneven.
