24.08.202611:14:44UTC+00European Equities Flat as Markets Eye Iran Sanctions

European equities pared early losses to finish Monday’s session little changed, with both the STOXX 50 and the broader STOXX 600 closing flat at 6,460 and 654, respectively. Market participants are focused on US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s press conference later today for further detail on Iran sanctions, while comments from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh at Friday’s Jackson Hole symposium are being closely watched for guidance on the interest-rate outlook.

Last week, European stocks ended lower as rising oil prices, higher bond yields and mounting tensions in the Middle East stoked inflation concerns and reinforced expectations for a more hawkish trajectory from the ECB. Sector-wise, Basic Resources outperformed, supported by higher gold prices amid a weaker US dollar, while Travel & Leisure also posted gains. Energy names softened as the recent rally in crude took a breather, and the technology sector remained under pressure ahead of Nvidia’s earnings report on Wednesday.

In corporate news, Shell slipped 0.1% after the Financial Times reported that several potential bidders have shown interest in the company’s US chemical assets.
