27.08.202609:30:00UTC+00South Africa’s Producer Prices Fall Sharply in July, Deepening Deflation Trend

South Africa’s Producer Price Index (PPI) registered a deeper decline in July 2026, signaling intensifying deflationary pressure at the factory gate level. On a month-over-month basis, PPI fell by -1.0% in July, compared with a -0.1% decline in June 2026, according to data updated on 27 August 2026.

The latest reading underscores a marked acceleration in producer-price deflation: while June’s figure suggested a marginal easing in input and output costs, July’s steeper drop points to broader and more pronounced price weakness across the production sector. On a month-over-month comparison, the “actual” July change is measured against June, while the “previous” June reading reflects the change relative to May 2026.

This deepening negative trend in PPI could have mixed implications for the broader South African economy. On one hand, falling producer prices may help contain consumer inflation downstream; on the other, persistent deflation at the producer level can pressure corporate margins and signal weaker demand conditions, raising concerns about the underlying momentum of industrial activity.
