28.08.202619:30:00UTC+00Speculators Deepen Bearish Bets on Yen as Net Short Positions Widen to -63.3K

Speculative traders have increased their bearish exposure to the Japanese yen, with CFTC JPY speculative net positions falling to -63.3K, compared with -52.9K previously, according to data updated on 28 August 2026.

The widening negative figure indicates that net short positions on the yen have grown further, suggesting that market participants are increasingly positioning for continued yen weakness. This shift may reflect expectations of persistent policy divergence between Japan and other major economies, or ongoing concerns about the yen’s relative yield disadvantage.

The move deeper into negative territory underscores the yen’s status as a favored funding and shorting currency in global markets, with speculative flows continuing to lean against any sustained appreciation in Japan’s currency for now.
