01.09.202601:30:00UTC+00Australia’s Current Account Deficit Widens Marginally in Q2 2026 to $27.2B

Australia’s current account deficit edged slightly higher in the second quarter of 2026, widening to -27.2 billion dollars from -27.1 billion dollars in the first quarter of the year. The latest figures, updated on 01 September 2026, indicate a largely stable external position with only a marginal deterioration between the two periods.

The near-unchanged deficit level suggests that the balance between Australia’s exports, imports, and income flows with the rest of the world has remained broadly consistent through the first half of 2026. While the move from -27.1B to -27.2B marks a further quarter in deficit, the small scale of the change points to the absence of any sharp external shock or sudden shift in trade and income patterns over the period.

Market participants and policymakers are likely to view the data as signalling continuity rather than a turning point in Australia’s external accounts. Further quarters of data will be needed to determine whether this slight widening is the start of a trend or simply reflects normal short-term fluctuations in the current account balance.
