Japan’s foreign exchange reserves declined by USD 79.58 billion in August 2026 to USD 1.208 trillion, down from USD 1.287 trillion in July, reaching their lowest level since October 2022.

Foreign currency reserves totaled USD 994.98 billion, comprising USD 839.56 billion in securities and USD 155.42 billion in deposits. Of these deposits, USD 154.98 billion were held with foreign central banks and the Bank for International Settlements (BIS). Deposits with banks headquartered in Japan amounted to USD 409 million, while those with banks headquartered outside Japan came to USD 25 million.

Japan’s reserve position at the IMF was USD 11.42 billion, and its holdings of Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) were valued at USD 61.17 billion. Gold reserves stood at USD 124.10 billion. Other reserve assets amounted to USD 15.86 billion, and other foreign currency assets totaled USD 35.29 billion.
