14.09.202610:49:18UTC+00India Inflation Rate Rises as Expected

India’s headline inflation rate rose to 4.82% in August 2026 from 4.45% in July, marking the highest reading since December 2024 and in line with market expectations of 4.8%. The acceleration was driven by renewed inflationary pressures stemming from a sharp increase in energy prices following the outbreak of war in the Middle East, a trend further exacerbated by depreciation pressures on the rupee. Even so, inflation remained comfortably within the Reserve Bank of India’s target band of 4% ± 2 percentage points.

Price gains were notably strong in food and beverages (5.95%) and transportation (4.6%), both affected by the conflict-related spike in energy costs. Food inflation was additionally amplified by adverse weather conditions impacting key crops during a pronounced El Niño episode. At the same time, prices increased sharply for restaurants and accommodation services (8.38%), as well as for personal care, social protection, and other miscellaneous goods and services (15.17%).
