The Indonesian rupiah traded around IDR 17,800 per U.S. dollar on Wednesday, extending its recent gains as investors awaited Bank Indonesia’s policy decision later in the day. Markets widely expect the central bank to keep its benchmark rate unchanged at 5.75% for a third consecutive month, as policymakers seek to balance currency stability and domestic growth against mounting global macroeconomic headwinds. The board has already implemented a total of 100 basis points of rate hikes earlier this year, leaving limited scope for further aggressive tightening without risking additional pressure on economic activity.

At the same time, declining oil prices have helped ease concerns about imported inflation and fiscal pressures, even as domestic price risks remain elevated. Annual inflation quickened to 3.19% in August, driven in part by higher food costs amid El Niño-induced supply disruptions. A strong U.S. dollar also constrained the rupiah’s advance, with the dollar index hovering near an eight-week high as hawkish signals from the Federal Reserve reinforced expectations of another rate increase later this year.
