Norway’s total domestic loan debt to the general public increased by 4.5% year-on-year to NOK 8.05 trillion at the end of August 2026, up from an eight-month low growth rate of 4.3% in July. Lending to non-financial corporations accelerated, with annual growth rising to 4.8% from 4.0%, bringing their outstanding debt to NOK 2.42 trillion. Household loan debt maintained a steady annual growth rate of 4.6%, reaching NOK 4.79 trillion. By contrast, loan debt growth for municipal governments slowed to 3.0% from 3.4% a month earlier, with total municipal debt standing at NOK 8.38 billion. On a seasonally adjusted, annualised one-month basis, overall loan debt to the general public increased by 5.3%, following a 3.8% rise in the previous period.
