29.09.202605:40:37UTC+00NZX 50 Ends 1.1% Lower as Oil, Bond Yields Rise

The NZX 50 fell 147 points, or 1.1%, to 13,684 on Tuesday, wiping out the previous session’s gains and mirroring an overnight decline on Wall Street. The drop followed a rise in US Treasury yields, driven by higher oil prices, renewed inflation concerns, and expectations of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike. Recently, RBNZ Governor Anna Breman cautioned that inflation pressures could intensify if elevated oil prices persist.

The benchmark index touched its lowest level since September 16, with nearly all sectors in negative territory, led by energy stocks. Investors were also positioning ahead of key data releases, including New Zealand business confidence figures, China’s PMI readings, and US PCE inflation and employment data due this week—all seen as critical inputs for the Fed’s upcoming monetary policy decision.

Among the notable decliners were Channel Infrastructure (-3.6%), Summerset Group (-3.2%), Meridian Energy (-2.9%), and Freightways Group (-2.2%). In contrast, Hallenstein Glasson jumped 5.7% after reporting a 49.9% increase in net profit for the year ended 1 August 2026.
