22.10.202612:34:26UTC+00US Jobless Claims Fall to Lowest Level Since July

Initial claims for unemployment benefits in the US fell by 6,000 to 194,000 in the week ended October 17, coming in below market expectations of 200,000 and down from a revised 200,000 the week before, according to the US Department of Labor. This marks the lowest level of initial claims since mid-July and points to a labor market that remains resilient despite growing economic headwinds.

Strong corporate profits and steady domestic demand continue to shield workers from layoffs, while employers appear reluctant to make major staffing cuts amid an uncertain outlook. However, elevated energy costs—driven in part by the US–Israeli war with Iran—and uncertainty surrounding the conflict, the future path of Federal Reserve interest rates, and unsettled trade policy that could raise business costs are all weighing on hiring decisions.

At the same time, continuing claims rose by 25,000 to 1.728 million in the week ended October 10.
