In April 2025, retail sales in Brazil experienced a 0.4% decrease from the previous month, marking the most significant drop since June 2024. This followed a 0.8% rise in March, whereas analysts had forecasted a 0.8% decrease for April. Notable reductions were observed in the sales of fuels and lubricants, which fell by 1.7%, office, computer, and communication equipment and supplies, which decreased by 1.3%, and sales in hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages, and tobacco, which declined by 0.8%. Sales of furniture and household appliances dipped slightly by 0.3%. Conversely, certain categories experienced growth: sales of books, newspapers, magazines, and stationery increased by 1.6%, other personal and household goods rose by 1.0%, textiles, clothing, and footwear saw a 0.6% increase, and pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic, and perfumery items went up by 0.2%. When compared year-over-year, retail sales in April surged by 4.8%, recovering from a 1.0% decline in March and surpassing market predictions of a 3.4% rise.
