The UK economy grew by 0.6% quarter-on-quarter in Q1 2026, confirming the preliminary estimate and accelerating from a revised 0.1% expansion in Q4 2025. This was the strongest quarterly performance since Q1 2025.

Growth was driven primarily by the services sector, where output rose 0.8%, up from 0.1% in the previous quarter. The largest contributions came from professional, scientific and technical activities (+2.3%) and wholesale and retail trade (+1.8%).

Production output increased by 0.2%, supported by a 0.7% rise in manufacturing and a 1.2% increase in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply. These gains were partly offset by declines in mining and quarrying (-4.7%) and water supply (-0.7%).

The construction sector also expanded by 0.2%. Repair and maintenance work rose 3.3%, while new work contracted by 2.1%.

On an annual basis, the economy grew by 0.9% in Q1 2026, revised down from the preliminary estimate of 1.1%, and in line with the revised growth rate recorded in the previous quarter.
