European equity benchmarks finished Monday little changed, consolidating last week’s losses against a weakening macroeconomic backdrop and ahead of a heavy slate of corporate earnings. The Euro STOXX 50 ended virtually flat at 6,228, while the STOXX Europe 600 slipped 0.3% to 639.9.

European natural gas prices extended their recent surge after intensified US–Iran hostilities disrupted LNG tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, heightening inflation risks across the Eurozone. The ECB is still widely expected to leave interest rates on hold at its upcoming meeting, but markets have increasingly priced in the possibility of another rate hike later this year.

Bank stocks were mixed in advance of a pivotal week for financial sector results. Santander edged lower, whereas UniCredit and BNP Paribas gained 0.5% and 1.1%, respectively. Luxury names underperformed, with LVMH shedding more than 1.3% as rising global yields clouded the outlook for discretionary spending. In the transport sector, Ryanair dropped 5.2% after higher fuel costs weighed on its second-quarter earnings.
