South Africa’s 10-year government bond yield eased to around 8.78%, hovering near its lowest level since September and broadly in line with moves in other emerging-market peers. The decline followed a drop in crude oil prices amid hopes of easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which helped temper concerns over potential energy supply disruptions and renewed inflationary pressures.

Investor focus is now turning to upcoming domestic inflation figures and the South African Reserve Bank’s policy decision, both scheduled for September 23rd. While consumer inflation slowed to 4.3% in July from 5% in June, it is expected to pick up again in August after adjustments to domestic diesel prices.

Markets see a 25 bps rate hike as a plausible outcome this week, as the central bank faces mounting pressure to tighten policy in response to renewed inflation risks, partly driven by higher oil prices and the US Federal Reserve’s latest move. Although inflation expectations edged slightly lower in the third quarter, elevated oil prices remain a key upside risk to inflation, even as underlying economic activity stays weak. Against this backdrop, the SARB’s next policy step remains uncertain.
