Canada’s GDP is expected to have grown by 0.2% month-over-month in August 2026, according to a flash estimate. The expansion is projected to be led by gains in mining and quarrying and in retail trade, partially offset by a pullback in oil and gas extraction. This preliminary figure follows a flat reading in July, in line with market expectations, after three consecutive months of growth.

In July, the goods-producing sector—which accounts for roughly one quarter of total GDP—was essentially unchanged. Increases in construction (up 1.3%) and utilities (up 1.7%) were counterbalanced by declines in manufacturing (down 0.9%) and in mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction (down 0.5%).

Over the same period, the aggregate of services-producing industries was also flat. Growth in professional, scientific and technical services (up 0.3%), real estate and rental and leasing (up 0.2%), and accommodation and food services (up 0.8%) was offset by declines in retail trade (down 1.0%) and wholesale trade (down 0.4%).
