The Nikkei 225 Index climbed 1.94% to close at 66,754 on Wednesday, while the broader Topix Index advanced 1.67%, snapping a two-session losing streak as technology shares led a broad rebound.

SoftBank Group, a major investor in OpenAI, surged 6.6% after reports that the artificial intelligence startup is seeking to raise at least $30 billion in fresh capital at a valuation of about $1.4 trillion. Other technology names also gained, particularly AI infrastructure-related stocks such as Kioxia Holdings (up 1.2%), Taiyo Yuden (up 2.3%) and Fujikura (up 5.9%).

Market sentiment was further supported by a sharp pullback in oil prices after Saudi Arabia restored roughly half of the capacity of its East–West pipeline and the Trump administration ordered another release from US emergency reserves.

While the Nikkei managed a modest advance for September, it nonetheless logged its first quarterly decline since the first quarter of 2025, pressured by the protracted US–Iran conflict, surging bond yields, and the July selloff in AI-related stocks.
