The TAIEX, Taiwan’s benchmark stock index, climbed 308 points, or 0.7%, on Wednesday to close at 47,940, snapping a two-day losing streak. The advance was driven primarily by gains in electronic technology shares after the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index moved higher. Earlier in the session, the TAIEX briefly set a new intraday record at 48,380 before paring some of its gains.

The Electronic Technology sub-index rose 1.2%. TSMC — the world’s largest contract chipmaker and accounting for more than 40% of the TAIEX’s total market value — added 1.0%. MediaTek and Delta Electronics also advanced, rising 1.2% and 4.4%, respectively.

Upside was limited, however, by weaker sentiment from Wall Street, where stocks retreated overnight amid a jump in US Treasury yields. Investors were also cautious ahead of the release of the US PCE price index, seeking signals on the Federal Reserve’s policy stance at its upcoming meeting.

For the third quarter, the TAIEX surged 3.9%, marking a third straight quarterly gain, supported by sustained optimism over AI-related investment.
