DJIA: FOMC and tech earnings to determine whether correction continues

Dow futures (INDU) trade around 52,490.0 ahead of the US session on Tuesday, but the FOMC and tech earnings will decide whether the price holds above the key support band at 52,100.0–52,140.0. The DJIA closed Monday at 52,361.58, up 146.42 points, or 0.28%. The rally looks fragile: the tech sector continues to weigh, and now the market faces the FOMC decision on Wednesday plus reports from Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon—which will determine whether the Dow gets a breather or the correction deepens.

The Dow showed relative resilience on Monday amid mixed moves elsewhere. While the S&P 500 and Nasdaq recovered from last week's sell-off, the Dow rose more modestly, reflecting its composition: less exposure to semiconductors and AI infrastructure and more weight in financials, industry, and health care. Still, the backdrop remains tense.

Key drivers

The FOMC will almost certainly pause, but the market is focused on December. CME FedWatch shows about a 90% chance of no change at the Oct 27–28 meeting and roughly an 80% chance of a December hike. TD Securities says a pause "significantly raises the probability of a December hike," and holding now "raises the bar for avoiding an additional hike this year." For the Dow, that means any hawkish Warsh rhetoric would increase pressure on equity valuations.

Tech earnings are the other key risk for sentiment. Microsoft and Alphabet report on Wednesday after the close; Amazon reports Thursday. Deutsche Bank calls these results an "extraordinarily important test" of recent AI-related concerns. Investors will watch not only revenue but capex plans. If companies commit to further capex growth without convincing monetization, the AI sell-off could resume and the Dow will not be spared.

The technical picture remains fragile. After last week's drop from a 52,940.0 high, near-term support is at 52,290.0, with stronger support in the 52,140.0 (D1 EMA50)–52,100.0 (H4 EMA200) band. A break below would open the path to 51,000.0–50,500.0 (D1 EMA144 and EMA200) and then 50,200.0 (W1 EMA50)–50,000.0. Holding above the support cluster keeps the possibility of a recovery to 53,500.0–53,800.0 in the coming weeks.

Key events to watch

Tuesday, Oct 27—US durable goods orders for September (12:30 GMT). Forecast: +1.9% after -0.1% in August. Strong data would support Dow industrial components.

Tuesday, Oct 27—Conference Board consumer confidence (14:00 GMT). Consensus 80.4 vs 81.9 in September. A weak print would heighten growth concerns but could also temper Fed tightening expectations—a mixed outcome for the Dow.

Wednesday, Oct 28, 18:00 GMT — FOMC decision. If Warsh confirms a hawkish path and signals a December hike, equity pressure will increase; a softer tone would give the Dow a chance to bounce.

Wednesday, Oct 28 (after the close)—Microsoft and Alphabet earnings. Deutsche Bank calls these an extraordinary test of recent AI worries. Disappointing results or heavy capex guidance could trigger a fresh tech sell-off.

Thursday, Oct 29, 12:30 GMT—preliminary Q3 US GDP and PCE. Strong prints would confirm economic resilience and bolster December hike odds.

Thursday, Oct 29 (after the close) — Amazon earnings. Consensus revenue: $202.2bn, +12.2% y/y. AWS trends and capex guidance are the key focus.

Conclusions and recommendations

The DJIA remains vulnerable, trapped between industrial resilience and tech pressure. Key levels: bulls 52,650.0; bears 52,100.0; critical zone 50,700.0–50,500.0.

For short-term traders:

- Consider shorts on a sustained break below 52,100.0 with targets of 51,370.0–51,000.0 and a stop-loss above 52,700.0.

- Consider longs on a sustained break above 52,650.0 with targets 52,750.0–53,000.0; resistance in this zone may require additional momentum to clear.

- Monitor the FOMC (Oct 28) and Microsoft/Alphabet earnings (Oct 28) closely—these are the key triggers.

For medium-term investors:

- A pullback to the 51,000.0–50,800.0 zone could be used to cautiously add longs while retaining a constructive view on the index's long-term prospects, but uncertainty around AI capex payback calls for added caution.

Risk management:

- Expect elevated volatility around the FOMC and earnings season.

- Use strict stop-losses, especially on breakout trades.

- Watch yields, oil, and tech firms' capex commentary.

This overview is based on open sources and media reports and reflects an analysis of price dynamics that depend on many factors; risk management and position control are therefore essential.
