The euro declined against most major currencies in early European deals on Monday, following the release of data showing sharp contraction in French manufacturing activity in June.

Data from Markit showed that French manufacturing PMI fell to a 6-month low of 47.8 in June, from 49.6 in May. Economists expected a reading of 49.5 for the month.

The euro that ended yesterday's deals at 138.70 against the yen declined to 138.54. Against the pound, the euro fell back to 0.7978 upon the data.

The euro pared gains to 1.3592 against the greenback from an early high of 1.3612.
