The South African rand continued its upward momentum against the US dollar, reaching approximately 16.4 per USD, marking its strongest position since early August 2022. This appreciation was largely fueled by a rise in gold prices following heightened geopolitical tensions due to US military actions in Venezuela. Over the recent weekend, US authorities captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on drug-trafficking charges, with President Donald Trump announcing that Venezuela would be placed under provisional US control, although the specifics of this move remain uncertain. Market participants also considered the potential for similar interventions hinted at by President Trump in regions including Colombia, Mexico, Cuba, Iran, and Greenland. In the previous year, the South African rand appreciated over 10% against the US dollar, positioning itself as one of the top performers among emerging-market currencies. This performance was bolstered by a weakening dollar, improved fiscal conditions in South Africa, a reduced inflation target, and elevated commodity prices.
