In December 2025, electronic card transactions in New Zealand experienced a slight decline of 0.1% compared to the previous month, with the seasonally adjusted total standing at NZD 11.0 billion. The data revealed an increase in spending within specific sectors, such as fuel, which rose by 1.1%, and hospitality, with a 1.4% uptick. Conversely, there was a decrease in consumables, down by 0.1%, and services, which saw a significant drop of 2.1%. Further declines were noted in other areas, with apparel decreasing by 3.6%, motor vehicles excluding fuel falling by 1.8%, and durables slightly down by 0.1%. Annually, total electronic card spending fell by 1% in December, following a 1.8% increase in November.
