09.03.202608:33:02UTC+00Slovakia Construction Output Falls For 1st Time in 9 Months

Construction output in Slovakia fell by 1.9% year-on-year in January 2026, a sharp reversal from the 11.7% increase recorded in December 2025. This was the first monthly decline since April of the previous year and was largely driven by a steep drop in activity among foreign construction firms, whose output plunged 19.3% after having surged 23.5% in December.

Within domestic production, building construction, a key segment, also weakened, falling 3.3% after a 5.7% rise in the previous month. Repair and maintenance work likewise contracted, down 5% compared with a 10.1% gain in December.

Even so, overall domestic construction activity edged up 1% year-on-year, following a 10.4% increase in December, extending its growth streak to a third consecutive month despite the winter slowdown. This resilience was underpinned by continued gains in new construction, which grew 2.3% (vs 10.2% previously), and in civil engineering works, which rose 15.8% (vs 21.4%), with civil engineering accounting for roughly one quarter of total construction output.
