Canada’s unemployment rate rose to 6.7% in February 2026, up from 6.5% in January—the lowest level in sixteen months—and slightly above market expectations of 6.6%. The increase reflects both a larger number of people actively seeking work and a decline in overall employment. The number of unemployed persons grew by 56,700, bringing the total to more than 1.51 million. At the same time, the labour force shrank by about 27,200, pushing the participation rate down to 64.9% from 65.0%. Net employment declined by 84,000 to 21.04 million, extending the recent downward trend. The overall job losses were driven by a drop of 108,000 in full-time positions, partially offset by a gain of 24,500 in part-time jobs.
