Japan’s small manufacturers reported a stronger improvement in business conditions in the first quarter of 2026, as the Tankan Small Manufacturers Diffusion Index (DI) rose to 4 from 2 in the previous quarter. The latest reading, updated on 31 March 2026, marks an uptick from the fourth quarter of 2025, when the index stood at 2.

The move into higher positive territory suggests that a growing share of small manufacturing firms now view business conditions as favorable rather than unfavorable. While the increase is modest, it indicates a gradual build-up of optimism among smaller producers, a segment often seen as sensitive to shifts in domestic demand and cost pressures.

Analysts and market participants will be watching subsequent Tankan releases closely to assess whether this improvement among small manufacturers can be sustained and potentially broadened, reinforcing Japan’s broader economic recovery narrative into 2026.
