20.05.202623:50:00UTC+00Japan’s Import Growth Cools in April, Easing to 9.7% Year-on-Year

Japan’s import growth slowed in April 2026, with the value of inbound goods rising 9.7% year-on-year, down from a 10.9% annual increase recorded in March 2026. The latest data, updated on 20 May 2026, indicate a modest cooling in external demand or import prices after a stronger pace of expansion a month earlier.

Both figures are calculated on a year-over-year basis, comparing each month to the same period a year prior. While imports continued to grow at a solid clip, the deceleration from March suggests that some of the upward momentum in Japan’s import bill may be easing as the second quarter begins. Investors and policymakers will be watching upcoming trade releases closely to see whether this softer trend in import growth persists in the months ahead.
